Decode job descriptions with VAL generative AI

Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the job postings and unsure how to tailor an effective CV? VAL can help you maximise your job application game.

Understanding a job description is essential for identifying important keywords and relevant experiences to include in your CV. Discover how VAL generative AI can assist you in this process and boost your confidence in your job search.

Why understanding a job description matters

Navigating the job market can be challenging, especially for students entering the professional world for the first time. When searching for a suitable job, a job description (JD) serves as your first look at the position. By carefully understanding the details and requirements outlined in the JD, you can assess whether the job is a good match for you. This includes tasks, skills, and requirements needed for the role.

Your understanding of a JD will help you find important keywords and related experiences to include in your tailored CV. Nowadays, according to a Jobvite Recruiter Nation Report, 75% of recruiters use Applicant Tracking Systems – a software that helps employers sort CVs based on specific keywords that match the JD. Including these keywords will increase the chance that your CV passes initial screenings.

Using VAL to decode the job description

One useful tool you can use to assist with this step is VAL - RMIT’s generative artificial intelligence virtual learning assistant.

You can ask VAL to:

  • Help you understand a JD
  • Provide CV keywords and experiences to highlight in your applications.

The outcome will be a set of CV keywords that should be included in your tailored applications. You may combine the two prompts as shown in the example below:

It is important to check VAL’s results and use them as suggested content for your applications. Remember, you are responsible for ensuring that your CV is personalised and shows your unique strengths.

Making the most of your university experience

91tv often visit the RMIT Job Shop to ask whether their lack of experience limits their chances of attracting employers' attention. relevant Work-Integrated Learning courses can be particularly beneficial, especially those that include industry partners' case studies or project-based assessments.

When highlighting these courses in your experience, provide specific details about the project, including its purpose, target audience, and timeframe. It's important to share information that the company allows while avoiding any private information. Doing so will give employers a clear overview of how the course relates to the position for which they are hiring.
